Columbia, Media Bias, Jane Russel and more…
Saturday brought back memories of January 1986 which is still a vivid day in my mind even if I had to look up the exact date. But I recall clearly where I was in 1986, what I was doing, who I was with and what I thought.
In some ways my own views on the world have changed since that time, but my reaction and thoughts on Columbia are almost exactly as they were when I watched Challenger in my High School cafeteria with my companions. Somewhere in my archives there is a short essay on Challenger, I will attempt to dig it out.
But the misguided political rhetoric has started where Columbia is concerned. They’ll do anything to slam President Bush. Time to turn if off before my blood pressure spikes.
The world has continuted to spin and the media has, at least to some degree, covered other events of interest in the last few days. The first of which is a debate between Sam Donaldson and Robert Novak on left leaning media bias. I’m not a big fan of Novak and could happily grow to old age without ever seeing or hearing Sam again. But a snippet from Novak really caught my attention:
putting a tax cut in front of a liberal journalist is “like putting a cross in front of a vampire.”
I’ll drink to that, even if it is only Dr. P…
Most days I’m in the office in front of my computer so get to hear a few of my favorite talk radio programs. No.. Rush Limbaugh is not in the list normally though I do tune him in every now and then to see if he’s still a moderate in conservative clothing. These days the one show I will go out of my way not to miss (after Greg of course), and will often listen to the days show a couple of times thanks to his website, is Sean Hannity.
Today was especially interesting, his guest was one David Clennon from ABC’s The Agency ( I like the show and I like Mr. Clennon’s acting). But it seems that Mr. Clennon is something of a liberal, ok, a flaming liberal. It got to the point a few times that I was flat out embarrassed for Mr. Clennon, who Sean was all but skinning alive. Not that he didn’t deserve it.
But then someone else joined the conversation, James Woods. I’ve watched him for years and like many actors I just simply like the guy. Today I wasn’t disappointed and realized why I like Mr. Woods. Very sharp, educated, politically astute. Too bad I was out of range and loosing the signal (I was driving) before Sean got to ask Mr Woods about September 11th
Along the same vein, actress Jane Russel spoke at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Arlington, Va. and declared herself a “mean-spirited, narrow-minded, right-wing Christian bigot“. I’d get that put on a T-Shirt but I’m still awaiting my “Member: Vast Right Wing Conspiracy” shirts so it’ll have to wait.
It is true that I ridicule the cheese eating surrender monkeys on a regular basis, including that portion of our northern neighbors. I was surprised when Germany’s Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder came out siding with the French (see “Cheese Eating Surrender Monkeys” for a bit of history) on the US and UN ( and the rest of Europe) stance against So-damn Insane, um sorry, Sodam Hussin (we don’t exactly need their great military). So you can image my pleasure at this news. There were a couple of things that especially pleased me beside Schroeder’s loss of the state house and personal disappointment. First, it is fortunate that a German Al Gore isn’t challenging the winning 48% votes, and second the Christian Democrats (CDU) now control the state house with the pro-business Free Democrats. There may be hope for Germany (France is lost, if you don’t believe me check here and here), only time will tell. And maybe we won’t have to move our bases.
