Life in the Boonies

I have lived in the boonies these past 12 years and see deer almost daily. So it is a normal day to be driving down the road, either just off the highway or almost to the house, and see a dozen deer trying to decide if they should cross the road or wait for a victim. Family, friends and neighbors have all had run ins with deer including the consequential damage to grill, hood, bumper, and occassionally windshield, of their vehicles.

I was not surprised to see a couple of large deer standing in the middle of the road, a half dozen others to each side, as I turned off the highway this evening. The normal ritual is to simply come to a stop and wait for them to mosey out of the way and then cautiously slip past them at a crawl.

This was not the case this evening and I can only imagine that somewhere along the line this young doe missed the memo. The two in the road finally get their eye full and mosey off, I start moving again. Out of right field, from behind a fence, this doe decides it is time to cross. The fact that I am right between her and her friends is of little import. Slam!

I truly felt for her as she hit the passenger side door, mashing her face against the window. I could see the look of incredulity in her eyes and she had to have been muttering something obscene as we stared at each other for a few fleeting seconds.

After a moment she regained her composure and, with feline nonchalance, move around my car to join up with her pals. Her pals who were rolling in the field with tears in their eyes, they could have atleast maintained their composure until the human left. But then, the human was laughing, too.

I don’t know… she was eyeing those empty sliders boxes (White Castles) boxes! That’s probably why there was drool on the window…
