Nation of Wimps?
Are we really becoming such paranoid wimps that the site of kids playing with a spent Light Anti-Tank Weapon (LAW) tube should inspire such fear? Give me a break people. It was an empty fiberglass tube! Anyone with a brain could look through and see a 66mm circle of light at the other end!
“It’s scary because I live here and my kids are here, if it’s going to start happening again,” said another area resident. “I don’t understand who would do something like that.”
To call in the bomb squad is sheer idiocy. These thing have been available in the surplus market since I was a kid so it’s not anything new.
Now that the “weapon” was determined to be spent is it being returned to the children who were playing with it? Likely not, it’s a politically incorrect toy for children to play with. It is apparently now OK to confiscate toys from children, with the assistance of the local PD, because a passerby is afraid of it.
I actually would have applauded a neighbor or passerby that asked to check the tube, seen that it was empty, and given it back. That would have been a reasonable response considering the climate today. But call the bomb squad?!
There is a price to pay for living in a truely free society that some people are unwilling to pay and it seems one of the children’s fathers is in that category.
“That’s pretty bad. I don’t think the security is as good as it should be, at least over here, because there are too many people running in and out [of the precinct] too easily,” said one father
What would this guy have done? Soviet Block style check points on the way into or out of their burough? Have we become that cowardly in America?
