Finally DSL
After 7 years on ISDN the local telco was finally able to get DSL to my little cabin in the woods. The order was placed last Friday and what I thought was the modem arrived today. I was surprised to open the box and find an ActionTec wireless router w/ 4 port switch. It actually too me longer to find the current hub under my desk (to get at the network cable for my main system) than it did to enter my user info (PPPoe) into the router, change the router’s admin password and make sure the Wireless (54mbit) was disabled.
My initial tests show I’m getting over 600kbs (768/384kbs DSL service) which good for 15k feet from the CO. If the thing proves stable over the next week I’ll get the ISDN disconnected.
The little router is Linux based on a 150mhz MIPS, I was quite pleased to telnet to it and get the busybox login prompt. Although I may replace it with an IPSec/VPN router to connect to the office and take the PPTP load off my main home server.
