XTRAMSN News: World News: US Should Listen To UN Criticism - US Envoy
I was originally sad to see John Danforth leave as our Ambassador to the United Nations. Then he went and opened his mouth.
The United Nations is important for the welfare and for the stability of the world, and it is important for the welfare of the United States as well
Hardy-hare… show me one operation of any size the United Nations has sucessfully completed. Like free elections in Bosnia, oops - sorry. how about keeping the peace in north Africa? Oops, sorry… How about their rapid response to the tidal wave in Asia? Oops, sorry… How about disarming of Iran and Korea of their Nukes? Oops, sorry…
Anyway back to Danforth… that alone could likely have been glossed over as simply not well thought out and / or misconstrued. But how about his comments on the UN and Iraq, oil-for-food, sexual abuse in north africa?
But those points of criticism should not detract, and do not detract, from the essential value of the United Nations,” he said, citing a peace agreement signed in southern Sudan, various peacekeeping missions and the U.N. response to the Indian Ocean tsunami as examples of its “essential quality.”
Sudan is peaceful now? Do those in Dufar know this? Or did they miss the memo as it flew by their head on a machette. And helping in Asia? The help they didn’t start to mobilize until after 2 days of hearing about how slow President Bush was to react?
I don’t think so. Good bye Ambassador Danforth, don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
