DSL Woes

I’m not quite sure what’s going on but over the last week my DSL connection has been bouncing like crazy. Not the link (though that has flickered a few times) but the bandwidth.

I described the problem to one of the guys at the office as being like someone standing there hold a kink in a slippery garden hose and occassionally releasing it to get a better grip. Now repeat this every few mintues for the 7 days and you see my dilima.

It has actually gotten so bad that the CNET speed test is giving me connection speeds I’ve not seen since my last 14,4 baud modem. More frequently it simply times out entirely with no result back.

After sending the ISP an email, finally getting it to send, I get it bounced back. Seems they’ll only take electronicly submitted help requests via a web form. Wouldn’t be so bad if I could get to it easily. I just had to be patient and wait.

I’m figuring either they’ve turned up a bunch of new connections on the same DSLAM or there is a bad splice along my copper or the backbone feed is saturated by P2P users or they’re having border router issues.

But when it takes 2+ minutes to load Drudge something is definately wrong. And long experience with several DSL companies tells me I’m probably screwed because I’m at the fringe of the distance-to-CO range and fankly they don’t really “need” my $50/mo. Time will tell.
