Ubuntu

My brother has been working with Ubuntu for a project he’s working on and is impressed.

I have to say, that is the most
impressive out of the box combo I’ve ever worked with,
especially considering the price. I’d say in about 45
minutes I was able to install the software and make
J2EE “Hello World” application that included a JSP, a
servlet, and an EJB and have it all deployed and
running.

Of course he’s a Java guy so he’d also do well with the lastest SuSE releases which offer the same level of out-of-the-box Java support.

It occurs to me that with winter coming it is once again time to do a marathon of Linux installations to checkout the current crop of distributions. Mandriva is still tops for me mainly because as i’ve gotten older and learned more about Linux in general it has become more about using the operating system than exploring it. Familiarity certainly aids productivity so it will take either serious deficiencies on Mandriva’s part, or serious advantages on another distributions part, to get me waiver too much.

But Ubuntu is one of several newer distributions that deserve a closer look and with the multitude of changes occuring at Mandriva its a good time to check my options.
