Bullet Lead
Metals are going through the roof which isn’t making my search for lead any easier. Already I’m seeing cast bullets at twice the prices of only 3 or 4 years ago and the local supply of wheel weights, linotype and plumbers lead is very competitive. So I’m looking for lead where ever I can find it including a lot of listings on eBay that are going well over $1 a pound because they’re shipping only 20 pounds at a time which means the seller and USPS are both getting the same amount of money from the sale.
So I’ve started looking for alternatives since it looks like I’m going to pay $1 a pound for ingots (or $0.97 a pound for lead shot from the local store) I might as well price virgin alloys from a smelter. Of the few smelters I’ve emailed (that had prices under $2 a pound listed) only one responded and they actually picked up the phone and called me. The price is still more than I want to pay at $42/50lbs FOB St. Louis, MO. but it is still 1/2 the cost of already cast and I can get larger quantities. I hate to say it but I’m considering starting a small stockpile.

Of course, the more interesting part of this story is the fact that there was a major armed robbery in France….
