Pirate radio stations challenge feds

I have mixed feelings about the so-called pirate radio stations, low power stations people broadcast from their homes for hobby entertainment or outreach. First, I understand the “we’re not stealing anything” attitude and sticking-it-to-the-man is simply part of human nature, at least until you grow up and become “the man”. Conversely, there is a limited usable range and regulating to some degree so that stations aren’t dumping all over each other is in not only the consumer interest but the interest of the stations, too. How can someone enjoy one station with an unregulated neighboring station is slopping into your freq?

In addition to that my own life has been touched by what I believe to be a sloppy local pirate station. This guy has to be within 1/2 to 1 mile radius for it to slop over the entire lower half of my VHF channels with what sounds like home-brew country music. I have serious overpower snow from below channel 2 to clear up around channel 8 or 10. The music is coming in on 4 and 6 and throwing strong horz freq lines si typical of over-amping your cable.

Fortunately I’ve only ever had it happen on Saturday late morning through mid afternoon so hopefully he just needed some time to get his equipment dialed into the freq he was looking for.
