Coming Elections

I was reading Gary Varvel’s current cartoon on his blog and it brought this thought to mind, again:

Every election is choosing the lesser of two (or three) evils. I personally vote based on the averages and a few key issues. On average Republicans are less likely to support infanticide, taking away my guns, paying people to not work or regulate business out of business. Whereas the Democrats are more likely to raise my taxes, regulate businesses until they go under, take away my guns, and give more of my money to people who figured out they can sit on their tushies all day playing video games. Or, so it used to be.

Sadly, this so-called “compassionate conservatism” has blurred the lines on several issues. The whole “big government” and government spending thing was once fairly clear cut with the Republicans wishing a smaller, fiscally tighter goverment and the Democrats wanting government to take the Mommy role in all of our lives. Today, the Democrats maintain their stance more firmly than ever. Republicans, generally those Republicans in power, have increasingly moved into the outer rings of the Democrat’s Socialist Mommy State.

Another realm once the dominion of the Democrats was Federal overpowering of States rights. I guess, considering Lincoln was a Republican of sorts, it should be no surprise that the Republican party has pushed Federal meddling much further into the States in recent years. In most cases the cause has been one somewhat demanded by the constituency or popular (media driven) opinion such as No-Child-Left-Behind.

Compassion is sometimes a vice rather than a virtue.
