GM reportedly in talks to buy Chrysler
There are 3 US automakes left though judging by current quality issues I have to wonder that there are that many. GM especially seems determined to ruin what reputation of quality remains to US automakers and hand the top auto sales position to Toyota. Now, in their quest to either remain on top or ruin what’s left GM is considering the acquisition of Chrysler Group.
I was raised on GM vehicles and a brief flirtation with European cars asside I have purchsed mostly American brands. Of the last 6 family vehicles there were 2 fords, 3 GM’s and a Chrysler. Of those the GM’s have been consistenly the worst on maintenance with Ford and Chrysler being pretty close to neck in neck though comparing a 01 Taurus to a 97 Intrepid may not be a fair representation of Chrysler’s current production vehicles.
To rag on Chrysler a little I’d never have purchased our current problem child, the much cursed 2003 Grand Prix GT, had Chrysler taken the lead in customer service when Intrepid engines started blowing up in the first few years of the new bodystyle introduced in 2000. But their propensity for blaming it on the customer left a bad impression of Daimler’s customer service skills. Hence the Grand Prix purchase because of their good reputations. Yeah, right.
Looks like my next vehicle will be a Ford or a Toyota.

These are rumors . . . GM has “been in talks” with Ford - Honda and Toyota . .
Who knows at this point . . all I know is that GM would be a world of hurt for acouple reasons
A- The intial cost of obsorbing the union work force
B- Obsorbing the cost of the future production models coming off the line very soon
C- They would have to pick up in the middle of DCX’s “project x” (their transformation/reformation project)
D- GM just came out of their own reformation project . . and are just now starting to be able to look to the future . . .
I dont possbily see how GM could swing this . . .
Oh also - alot of benz’s are being produced on Chrysler frames (and benz is looking to bring out a whole new “a class” (small car class) based off a Chrysler designed base) - So not to mention - benz has some vested interest riding on chrysler’s wellfare (Also as a side note . . .part of the reason chrysler lost money over the year was the fact the benz has to tap into chryslers north american revenue - but they still didnt do as bad as some others . . . )
