FN-FAL Short Gas System Barrel

Some time back I picked up a set of DSA short handguards and packed them off with an Imbel barrel to be properly hacked up. I won’t go into depth on the long road that it’s been but suffice it to say the Imbel barrel simply wasn’t adaquate to the task and finding a worthy U.S. made barrel took quite a bit of wait and see. In the end I’m as happy as I can be with the outcome without having built it yet.

The receiver is the only real questionable part at this point, I’d prefer one of Dan Coonan’s but due production backlog may end up using a DSA or Enterprise which isn’t really “settling” after having built 3 Century receivers.

As for the rest it has all been patiently waiting though I’m considering a Falcon para kit to round out the package. I’m not really fond of the FAL para simply because I like to actually shoot and nothing is as comfortable for that as the standard hump back stock. But short out front will look better with short in the back. Plus it will make a tidy little package worthy of a 32″ or 35″ Blackhawk discreet case. :)

For those keeping track of such things 922r compliance will include 7 US parts; receiver, barrel, handguards, butt stock, pistol grip, piston. I am hoping part number 7 will be the U.S. made para bolt carrier but I don’t recall off hand if that is a valid part. If not then it’ll either be a flashhider or charging handle. I would prefer to use an Imbel flash hider (though I have a FSE “fake brake” still in the wrap) so that means one of Dave Schneider’s cocking handles ( as is on the G1 safe queen ) unless I can find a US made para folding one…

Lastly, there is a part of me that is worried about the 16.25″ barrel and the sighting problems typical of that length. I am reflecting on the possibility of using the Grenadier Precision scope cover if I must but I don’t particularly want to move it off the Izzy which seems quite content with it though the Izzy can use my ancient AimPoint mount and a para cannot.
