U.S. most armed country: 90 guns per 100 people

America, to no one’s surprise, is the most heavily armed society at
90 guns per 100 people. What is surprising is that the normal anti-American spin seems missing from this article and actually makes a few surprising notes. First the correlation between a disarmed citizenry and poverty:

…while many poorer countries often associated with violence ranked much lower. Nigeria, for instance, had just one gun per 100 people.

While civilian gun ownership doesn’t equate with freedom it is certainly indicative of it and prosperity does tend to follow. To a point the study recognizes this in noting that:

Weapons ownership may be correlated with rising levels of wealth, and that means we need to think about future demand in parts of the world where economic growth is giving people larger disposable income

Are they actually warning arms manufacturers the be ready for a steady increase in business? More likely they are warning governments to be wary of economic growth without considering how to maintain their control.

According to the study Yemen has the second largest armed citizenry (per-capita) followed by Finland, Switzerland, Iraq and Serbia. What the survey doesn’t do is make note of the types of firearms. A citizenry armed with only double barrel shotguns is formidable, indeed, but no match for a quasi-modern army and therefore not a viable safeguard of liberty.

  1. Bob L. Says:

Another item of interest that people fail to realize when conducting this survey is that there are more than enough firearms of various sizes shapes and calibers that the other 10 in that 100 will also be arms IF they were not most likely crying liberals.
