Measuring Fuel Additives
I use Sea Foam and Techron (fuel injector cleaner) in rotation in my VTX, each for their own purposes. The problem I have is measuring and transporting the right amount. These products, as most automotive fuel system products, come sized for a 20-25 gallon tank. The VTX has a 4+ gallon tank…
So I have been using a set of old kitchen type plastic measuring cups I keep in the shop to measure the additive into an 8oz pickle relish jar (smallest I could find). Then I wrap the jar with a blue shop-type paper towel, put into a zip-lock bag and tucked into my tailbag for the next fillup. But thin petroleum distillates have a habit of finding their way out of the smallest seams and seals, such is the case with my pickle relish jar. It seeps around the seal, plus, I don’t particularly like a glass jar floating around in my tail bag.
Today drop into Autozone for another can of Sea Foam and had a look around. I figured if I can find an appropriate container that comes with a petroleum product then it is more likely to hold up versus something made for shampoo or hand lotion such as I’d find for travel use. I found what I was looking for in the grease and gear lube section, 4oz bottles of 2-stroke oil for $0.99.
Back at home, after dumping the 2-stroke oil into my big jug of 2-stroke oil I keep for the chainsaws, I rinsed the bottle twice with a 1/2 oz of Sea Foam to get the last of the oil out. I could have used gasoline but I’ve already drained all my gas cans for the season. While I rinsed I squeezed the bottle to see if I could hear any air escape or Sea Foam to out around the cap. It did. So I got down a piece of 400grit wet-dry and worked on the mount of the bottle a bit by turning it upside down and turning it against the 400grit laying on the counter. After only a few minutes I got a good seal. I hope its good enough.
Still, I’ll put it back in a zip-lock before dropping it in my tail bag and only time will tell if the bottle will hold up.
