BedInABox.com Mattress

A couple of weeks ago we received our new bed frame and got it all setup. The new frame is a platform with drawers under it and perfect for our tiny house as we’re always needing storage. Amusingly of the 6 drawers only a couple have anything in them two weeks later, but that’s another story.

Yesterday (Thursday) FedEx delivered our new mattress which after much reading I ordered the 11 inch PacDown Plus memory foam mattress from BedInABox.com. Reviews where hard to find for the company but there were a couple serious reviews, including one guy who bought it for his RV, and both were positive.

Now this mattress comes in a box roughly 24×24x48 and weighing 100 pounds. How the heck do you get a queen sized mattress, an 11″ one no less, into a box that size! Two words - vacuum compression. The mattress is then only maybe 3 inches thick, folded once, rolled, wrapped in cling wrap and then stuffed into a rather large draw-string bag.

Unpacking is really as simple as reversing that. It is amazing to puncture the bag seal and watch the 3 inch plank turn swell to 11″ thick medium-firm mattress. And it does it rather quickly, not more than 10 minutes and all the creases from packing are gone.

The mattress comes with a waterproof terrycloth cover (memory foam is a bit sensitive to moisture) and we chose to get the down cover (they offer a bamboo microfiber cover as well). Once all of this was figured out and installed came the test. Oh yeah….

While it will be at least a week before I can whole-heartedly endorse our decision any lingering doubt has left. For the price I cannot understand why anyone would spend 4 times the amount to get what amounts to the same thing? But if you walk into a store and look at any of the memory foam mattresses that’s exactly what you’re going to do.

Any updates on your bed-in-a-box? I am very curious because I have been wanting to buy one from their website.

I have been meaning to write further on it but haven’t gotten to it yet. Now over 3 weeks in I can say honestly I would most definitely buy it again!

The only lingering “issue” has been a little heat buildup that is typical of these types of mattresses. But according to what I’ve read one “adjusts” to this after about 30 days and we’re almost there. And we’ve been able to compensate by adjusting the thermostat and not putting as many blankets on.
