Forest Service hit for Border Patrol call

You’re in the Forest Service and you catch someone who it appears is doing something illegal in your park. They speak Spanish and you don’t so you reach out to the local Border Patrol, who has been challenging other agencies to use the Border Patrol for “translation services”, for a Spanish speaking officer to assist.

If you work for the USDA that’s the wrong answer and because a Forest Service officer in the Olympic National Forest in Washington state did exactly this the USDA “assistant secretary for civil rights” has declared the Forest Service cannot call the Border Patrol because it:

automatically “escalates” encounters between Hispanics and law enforcement

I guess I’m really not surprised that we have Federal Agencies worried about things outside their directive. NASA is doing Islamic outreach that doesn’t involve the use of (sub)orbital hardware after all….
