The Mandriva 2007 Upgrades

Wednesday, November 1st, 2006

With the release of 2007 it was time to upgrade. My experiences with \”upgrades\” have always been mixed but the 10 to 2006 series upgrades went well other than a few Active Directory issues on my office workstation. Really, I expected the same issues this time.
Doing the office machine first (it was still […]

Honda DN-01

Saturday, October 28th, 2006

I’ve never been much of a fan of either constant velocity transmissions or Honda’s Hondamatic clutchless shifting but I’d sure be interested in finding out how it all comes together in the concept DN-01 recently shown in Tokoyo. It looks part scooter, part CB-R with a few CB-F charateristics thrown in and powered […]

SGI smacks ATI with lawsuit

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

SGI’s suit against ATI looks suspiciously like a back door attack on AMD. This could get especially interesting since SGI has been using these cards in their own workstations for a few years which would indicate at least tacit approval.

Cornell Autism Research

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

It’s a long paper (67 pages) but worth at least skimming if not thoroughly reading, the likley link between television and autism, or more closely the link between the rise of cable television and autism. Since before cable there wasn’t enough programming to use your television as a babysitter. I’d recommend anyone still using their […]

Top ten geek business myths

Friday, October 6th, 2006

Though geared more toward IT Rondam Ramblings Top ten geek business myths carrys over into most any modern endeavor. If you’ve started a few businesses or been around small business for very many years many of the “myths” will be obvious. But if you’ve not, and are considering launching out onto your own, this is […]

More Geek Humor

Thursday, October 5th, 2006

OK, so you know a couple of languages but do you know how to shoot yourself in the foot with them?
I really can’t pick a favorite but among my top choices are Java, Javascript, CSS and AJAX way down in the comments..
The gun makes an XMLHTTPRequest for the bullet which arrives some unspecified time later, […]

RAID

Monday, October 2nd, 2006

If you’ve ever been confused by RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks) levels maybe this will help.

Software Recommendations

Wednesday, September 20th, 2006

Jeff has made a few software recommendations and while they include the fun google stuff like the caledar and spreadsheets (which I use and love, btw) he mentioned a piece called WorkRave that I’d not heard of.
Now I’ve seen this type of application crudely built for time billing (think lawyers) but never from […]

Mandriva 2007 RC1

Monday, September 11th, 2006

Mandriva 2007 RC1 has been released. Still my personal favorite distribution….

The AMD Virus

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

Wow, looks like Intel has been busy! Now don’t go getting too worried just yet, these 2 are still designated Proof of Concept. That means you won’t have to worry until next week.

Shady Vendors

Tuesday, August 15th, 2006

I often wonder how some companies can survive. Well over a month ago I ordered a new digital video recorder (DVR) to expand the security system in our building. After several weeks of reviewing systems and getting many quotes from vendors I decided on a small DVR specialty company who builds inexpensive but solid, standard […]

Eclipse Aviation Eclipse 500 Gets FAA Nod

Monday, July 31st, 2006

Wow, a private jet, the Eclipse 500 for only $1.3m.
It looks like a C90 Citation with jet engines and roughly 70 knots faster than a King Air 350.
I’ll take one!

Upside-Down-Ternet

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

They say revenge is a dish best served cold. Apparently, its not bad upside down, either. I really must applaude the ingenuity of this guy as well as his deciding to have a bit of harmless fun with the neighbor instead of simply walking next door and beating them.

Microsoft.com Preview Shuns Firefox

Tuesday, July 25th, 2006

Microsoft’s new website preview only works for IE and now that the industry rags have noticed instead of showing an error message they’re bouncing non-IE browsers to their current website instead.
I guess that’s better than saying “we still can’t write websites that work for everyone but you should buy our tools anyway”.

AMD Acquires ATI

Monday, July 24th, 2006

Just when I started switching back to AMD processors for my machines and started eyeing Opterons for some servers AMD goes and does something stupd, they acquire ATI. Why couldn’t they have acquired nVidia or Matrox?
In case you can’t tell I really don’t like ATI graphics chips.

Love that Treo

Monday, July 24th, 2006

Once again the performance of my Treo today makes me wonder how on Earth…..
Ah well, anyway…. I was talking to my Bro going down the road. A low power alert popped up but didn’t vibe the phone so I didn’t see it. Heck, the thing vibes if you check email, why not for a low […]

Upgrades Underway

Tuesday, July 4th, 2006

I dislike double posting but I’m almost finished bringing up a new server and moving all of my site over to it. While the main site isn’t yet on the new server anyone wishing a preview may visit the site under construction. The main site isn’t where the fun stuff is, though there are […]

Children to be given electronic identity cards

Monday, June 26th, 2006

Because they love their kids Belguim children are to be given electronic identity cards. Never mind the Big Brother stuff or the fact that a kidnapper will simply dispose of the card someplace other than where he disposes of the child and the whole thing is for naught. But because of that they’ll have leverage […]

Can’t Quit AOL

Thursday, June 22nd, 2006

And now we know why anyone still uses AOL. They can’t get out of it!

Flash? Of the Obvious…

Wednesday, June 14th, 2006

… but the headline gives such a great visual - VMWare eats Microsoft’s lunch again, steals toys, cuts in line

Why Startups Condense in America

Tuesday, June 13th, 2006

An excellent essay on why technology adventurers do it in America. There are advantages to being a unilateral super power especially when, as they say in business, you only have to do it better than your competitors. Because no one does it perfectly.
America is often a shining example of good […]

Reno Judge: Was it a 5.56 NATO?

Tuesday, June 13th, 2006

OK, this is going to be difficult to say in a delicate and circumspect way but here it goes….
A Judge in Reno is sniped in his office and
“He is conscious and talking with his family,”
First and foremost I hope they 1) nail the assassin’s hide to the courtroom wall, and 2) the judge recovers […]

Windows Servers Beat Linux Boxes?

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

Yep, looks like someone is smoking crack.
Seriously though, I’ve found Windows 2003 Server quite reliable for basic file server stuff with uptimes often going into the 4-6 month range. But, I’ve also had Linux servers up just days shy of 2 years, literally. What the headline doesn’t tell you that the article does is […]

Microsoft Disclosures

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

Guess what, remember when Microsoft said they wouldn’t ever use updates tools to keep tabs on you? Well, they lied. Technically it’s not Windows Updates but something their updates make you install if you want more updates….
If Window’s price were reflective of PC pricing since the advent of Windows it’d be $9.95…. […]

Google Spreadsheets

Tuesday, June 6th, 2006

Wow, Google just keeps going, now it’s spreadsheets. And you can, or will be able to, invite others to share/edit them. It’s currently in testing and by invite only but you can go to the link and add yourself to the waiting list. If you think it’d be useful…
